Verify the exact certification

ENERGY STAR status applies to qualifying model numbers, not automatically to every machine in a product family. Confirm the current certification, production rating, condenser type, and rated energy and potable-water consumption for the exact model under comparable test conditions.

Check rebate rules before purchase

Utility and government incentives vary by service territory, equipment type, purchase date, installation date, and available funding. Ask the program administrator whether preapproval, a participating contractor, proof of disposal, invoices, specification sheets, or post-installation inspection is required. Do not include a rebate in the budget until eligibility and timing are confirmed.

Compare total operating cost

Estimate expected annual ice production, local electricity, water, and sewer rates, condenser type, ambient and inlet-water conditions, filtration, cleaning, preventive maintenance, and service access. Compare machines at the same required output and operating assumptions; an oversized machine is not automatically the lowest-cost choice.

Plan the complete installation

Verify electrical service, potable water, drainage, ventilation, clearances, structural support, compatible storage or dispensing equipment, and service access for the exact model. Use current manufacturer instructions and qualified trades where required.

Protect efficiency after installation

Follow the manufacturer cleaning and maintenance schedule, keep air paths and condensers clean, and use water treatment appropriate for the site and equipment. Scale, restricted airflow, high ambient temperature, and neglected maintenance can reduce production and efficiency.
